Since hearts are a symbol often associated with love, why not try this heartfelt homemade Valentine's Day plaque?

Heart scrapbook wall art
A heart-shaped scrapbook page mounted on a wooden heart makes a lovely piece of wall art with special meaning. This is an ideal gift for a mother, wife, or daughter. To make it, you will need:

  • Scrapbook paper
  • Photos (photocopying prints and working with the copies to preserve the originals is a smart idea)
  • Scrapbooking embellishments of your choice
  • Glue
  • Large wooden heart
  • Paint
  • Brush
  • Sealer
  • Picture frame hanger

The first thing you should do is to place your heart on top of the scrapbook paper and trace around it. Then cut out the paper heart. This way, you won't make your layout too large for the wooden heart.

Next, paint the edges and back of the wooden heart and set it aside to dry. You may want to just paint the edges and glue a vintage music page or other vintage elements to the heart back instead.

While the paint is drying, it is time to create your photo layout. You may want to center your photo on the heart, but it also looks nice to have the photo on one side of the heart and a piece of memorabilia on the other. Some journaling in the lower center part of the heart balances the page.

After the photo layout is glued down, it is time to adhere the scrapbooking page to the wooden heart. Ideally, gel medium or Mod Podge would be spread on the heart and the scrapbooking page would be pressed into place. However, a slightly watered-down white school glue or a permanent glue stick should also work.

To make sure the project dries flat, place a piece of waxed paper on top of it and cover it with a heavy book. The next day, you should take the project to a well-ventilated spot and spray your favorite sealer on it. Allow the sealer to dry thoroughly.

Finally, carefully fasten the picture frame hanger to the back of the heart. Thread a pretty ribbon through the hanger and use it to attach a gift tag for the recipient.

Gift tag for a Valentine's Day gift
To make a gift tag that is as special as the gift you've just created, you will need:

  • 2 x 4 inch tag
  • 2 x 4 inch pages cut from scrapbook papers
  • Stapler
  • Pen
  • Glue

Fold the 2 x 4 inch pages to form a small 2 x 2 inch book. Staple the book down the center. Glue the back cover of the book to the bottom half of the tag. Write your traditional "to" and "from" message on the top half of the tag and write a loving message on the pages of the little book.
