Valentine's Gifts for Guys

By: Alice Langholt

Ladies, it's time to choose Valentine's gifts for guys. Guys can be less "mushy," so flowers, candy and poetic cards might not be the right fit. Don't worry, though. Your first gift goal is to be thoughtful. These tips will help you find the perfect gift.

Get Personal
All great gifts begin with knowing the recipient. Actually sit down, and make a list of what he likes to do: his hobbies, favorite outings, favorite foods, meaningful things you've done together, inside jokes and qualities you like about him. This list will be a jumping-off point for your best ideas.

Now What?
Read your list. Make up a basket of small items that go along with one or two of the things on your list. You can choose random items such as a matchbook from your favorite restaurant (make a reservation and write the time inside), a pair of warm socks for the sports fan or his favorite brand of chocolate bar.

Be Romantic
Guys appreciate romance, too, so consider a gift that says "I love to do things together." Present him with two tickets to the kind of concert, movie, sporting event or comedy show that he really likes. You can also include as reservations at his favorite restaurant first or afterward.

Don't just hand over the tickets when the time arrives. Instead, make a scavenger hunt out of the gift. Hide clues for him to find in his car, briefcase, desk, the pocket of his jacket, voice mail or e-mail. You can even have a friend tell him a clue. The all-day aspect will make the gift extra-special.

Show Your Creativity
Plan a fun evening featuring an activity you wouldn't ordinarily do together. What about a candlelit banana split "picnic" dessert by the fireplace? Or, make a crossword puzzle using an online puzzle generator with whatever words and clues you choose. Include clues and reminders about fun times you've had and inside jokes, and watch him fill it out while you both reminisce.

A "love menu" makes a thoughtful Valentine's Day gift for him. The menu list could include a backrub, a foot rub, hugs and kisses. He can choose what he likes, but he has to "pay" for the items he wants by making up a poem or singing a song to "earn" the credits for what's on the menu. Think fun and romantic, and you've got the idea.
