Valentine's Day provides a perfect opportunity for a couple to demonstrate their love and commitment. It is also a great excuse to get out of the house to have a nice meal in a restaurant. However, there's a danger that we can fall into the trap of doing the same thing every year, to the point where it all feels quite formulaic and not terribly romantic. The antidote to this is to put some thought into your Valentine's Day celebrations to ensure that it remains fresh and exciting. Your aim should be to make this Valentine's Day is the best one yet!
Spend the day together
Remember when you had just started dating and the two of you could hardly bear to be parted? Then life, kids, and responsibilities intervene so that many couples find that they rarely get a whole day to themselves. Try to book a day off work and arrange for the kids and pets to be looked after. Then you have a world of possibilities for how you choose to plan out your day. It might start with a lazy lie in and breakfast in bed or you might decide to cram in an action-packed day of activities.
Revisit past haunts
A good way to make Valentine's Day special is to think about the very early dates that you had with your partner. Which restaurants did you go to and what places did you visit? Maybe you had a really enjoyable day at your local zoo that sticks in the memory as a key early moment in your relationship. If so, then going back may ignite wonderful memories.
Do something fun and out of the ordinary
As adults, we spend a lot of time sitting at an office desk or trying to be responsible and grown up. It's important, though, that we take the opportunity every now and again to release our inner child and do something just for the sake of having fun! Maybe it could be a case of going on a roller coaster, or going ice skating, or even something as simple as going for a swim in your local pool. The key here is that you're taking the time to do something together as a couple, with the explicit intent of having fun. If the activity you've chosen is quirky and/or involves physical exertion then all the better!
Go the extra mile for a nice restaurant
Sitting down to a nice romantic meal is an integral part of the Valentine's Day experience. However, particularly in big cities, it sometimes feels rather impersonal to be one of countless couples all being served with a standard Valentine's Day experience. A much more intimate experience can be had if you can find a quiet out of the way eatery, where you will be one of a handful of couples. A perfect setting might be a small traditional restaurant in a little fishing village, where you are overlooking the rise and fall of the ocean as waves break onto a sandy beach or into a rocky coastline.
