How to Build Garage Shelves

By: Gene Rodriguez, III

Wondering how to build garage shelves? Although there are many ways to build garage shelves, the result should be a rugged unit that can stand up to anything. With all you throw into the garage, a lightweight shelf doesn't stand a chance.

How To Build Garage Shelves That Last

Garages are often used to store tools, garden equipment and seasonal items and shelving is the perfect way to handle the load. If your garage is a disaster area, here's how to get organized:

  • Sturdy materials. What do cans of paint, circular saws and leaf blowers have in common? They're all likely to be found in your garage-and they're all heavy! Most garage shelves are made from wood, since wood is inexpensive and easy to customize. If your shelves are going to be built from wood, make sure to use sturdy, 2" thick wood for support pieces and thick plywood for shelving. Consider ½" thick plywood a minimum with ¾" or thicker for storing heavy items.
  • The lay of the land. Take a good look at your garage and determine the best place for shelves. Remember, you'll need to leave clearance to park your vehicle (duh!) and for opening doors and unloading. Shelves located against the wall in front of the vehicle are classic. If your garage has stairs down from the house, the area to the side of the stairs is a perfect location for shelving.
  • Got studs? Fixing your shelves to the walls of your garage increases their security and load bearing capacity. If you have exposed studs, attach your horizontal shelf supports directly to the studs. If your studs are behind sheetrock, fix a horizontal piece of wood against the wall at the height of each shelf. Each piece should be nailed to the studs behind the wall and will serve to support the back of the shelf.
  • Behind closed doors. While shelving is important, you may also want to consider installing a few cabinets to store solvents, pesticides and other household chemicals. If you're planning to remodel your kitchen, save a few of the cabinets and hang them in the garage. Enclosed storage will help keep children away from dangerous materials.
  • Hanging around. Still need more storage? Consider going vertical. If you have open rafters in your garage, you can suspend shelving from these support elements that is perfect for storing lightweight, seldom used items like seasonal decorations.
