By: Sherry Holetzky

What better time is there to start a do-it-yourself project than springtime? Since spring is the time for new beginnings, it's a great time to get to work on a new look for your kitchen by refacing your cabinets.

Instead of getting buried under bills or stressed by sawdust, consider doing a few facelift projects instead of an entire renovation. Freshen up those kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them.

Have you seen all the wonderful products and ideas now available for cabinetry refacing? You can find nearly any style, color or finish that you like. Your kitchen cabinets can go from boring to brand new with a little time and hard work, and for a lot less money.

So, what are some of the different options?

Add color
A simple paint job just cannot be overlooked. It is one of the least expensive ways to get a new-looking surface or a new color in minimal time, and you can certainly do this one yourself.

Add function
Leave the base of the cabinets and the outside edges of cabinet doors the way they are and then simply tape off a section in the middle. Fill the center in with chalkboard paint. You'll not only get a new look but a new message center in the process.

Add panels
Measure and cut pieces of wood or veneer to fit the center of the cabinet. These should not be thick or heavy. Stain these pieces a shade lighter or darker than the existing cabinetry or create an intense contrast.

Don't forget to add some spiffy new hardware. You can always sand and paint existing hardware to add even more sparkle.
