How to Remove Vinyl Tile Adhesive

It is important that you know how to remove vinyl tile adhesive if you will be retiling your bathroom floor or walls. Vinyl tile adhesive is what is left over after you have ripped out tile. It is hard and can be extremely difficult to remove. You have a couple of options when removing vinyl tile adhesive, including an old-fashioned method using a heat gun and the newer, more efficient technique using tile adhesive remover. Here are your options.

Your first option is simple but can be painstaking and frustrating. It involves using a heat gun to soften the hardened vinyl tile adhesive and then scraping at it to get as much up as you can. You may choose to go this route if you happen to have a heat gun and the area that you need to remove the tile adhesive from is not very large. Otherwise, read on.

An adhesive remover can be an effective way to get up vinyl tile adhesive. The biggest caveat with adhesive remover is the chemicals that are in it. Don't use this around children or pets and make sure that the area that you will be working in is well-ventilated. You should also make sure that you are wearing protective gear, such as goggles and gloves.

Apply the adhesive remover to the vinyl tile adhesive as directed on the bottle. It will give you a minimum amount of time that the adhesive remover must sit on the tile adhesive; follow these recommendations. If you don't, you may end up just having to start from scratch.

Once you have let the adhesive remover sit for the recommended amount of time, scrape the tile adhesive using an old paint scraper. Work continuously and don't allow the tile adhesive or remover to sit too long on your scraper, otherwise it could harden there. It can be a good idea to work in sections around the room so that the solution is constantly on the tile adhesive for the right amount of time.

Once you have removed all of the vinyl tile adhesive, clean the floor. Let it dry completely before you begin retiling or replacing the flooring.
