Determining what you want out of your special space is the first step in building a water-garden sanctuary.
1. Design and placement are factors that need to be decided up front. Pay consideration to the amount of time you plan to devote not only to sitting around your water garden, but also to the maintenance aspect. Ponds with waterfalls may need to be periodically adjusted if wildlife and mother nature disturb the flow. Using a filter to draw the water up, is a great way to create a bi-level water garden, but pay attention to the fact that caregivers will have to clean the filter from sediment and leaves at least weekly, if not more often.
2. Materials are the next consideration. Commercial looks are popular but so are rustic scenes. This would be defined with material such as cement blocks, metal boxes, or plastic piping. Other options are using natural elements such as stone and wood.
3. Size is the third element. How big should the pond be? This might just be defined by how energetic someone feels digging the hole or it might be determined by the size of your yard. What percentage of the yard do you want to turn over to a water feature?
4. Embellish: Add water, water garden plants, colorful rocks, lights, filters, and fountains. Customize your water-garden with special decorations. Special garden stones provide hidden treasures amongst the water fall and plant life.
5. Enjoy: Induct gold fish and pretty soon you will find you have attracted other wildlife such as birds, frogs, snakes, chipmunks and even larger critters like Raccoons, porcupines, and rabbits. Occasionally, you may also host a visit from an unwelcome predator such as a blue heron. Laying a thin piece of chicken wire over the pond can prevent these birds from snatching your fish.
6. Relax: Wine and dine your significant other by your pond. Reflect on your past and your future. Build dreams together. Throw a penny over your shoulder and make a wish!
Good luck!
Spring flowering bulbs exuberantly herald the end of winter with bright blasts of color like fireworks in slow motion. When we squirrel away these gems in the fall, we almost forget about them. Then they pleasantly surprise us as they emerge the following spring when everything else is still drab and barren. |
