Homemade Water Softener Instructions

A homemade water softener solution can very quickly improve the cleanliness of your wash. By chemically neutralizing the effects of minerals in hard water, you laundry detergent will be more effective and your clothes will be cleaner.

A Homemade Water Softener Recipe

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium. These minerals can reduce the effectiveness of the soap in laundry detergent. Clothes washed in hard water fade faster, can appear dingy and feel stiff when they come out of the dryer. Here's how to create a salt-free homemade water softener to improve hard water laundry:

  • Find a container. You'll need a gallon-sized container to hold your homemade water softener. A milk jug with a screw on cap would work great, just be sure to clean any used container thoroughly and label the container clearly so that it is not used for any other purpose.
  • The recipe. With a funnel, pour 1 cup of Borax (available in most grocery store laundry sections) and two cups of washing soda (also available in the laundry section). Fill the rest of the container with water.
  • Mix well. Mix the solution until the powder mixture has completely dissolved. You can mix using a narrow rod or by sealing the container tightly and carefully shaking it.
  • Softening your water. To use your homemade water softener, add one cup to each load of laundry, for particularly hard water, you may need to add two cups of the mixture.
  • Ease up. When using your homemade water softener, cut the amount of detergent you normally use by half. Too much laundry detergent will negate the effects of your homemade water softener.
  • Short on ingredients? If you only have Borax or washing soda, but not both, a small amount of either will soften your water, just not as effectively as using the complete recipe.
