What Do Red Ants Eat?

What do red ants eat? This is probably a question you’d ask if you want to know how to stop feeding them. Red ants are often found in areas outside the home, but, occasionally, they will make their way into your home as well. Red ants are the most bothersome of all ants, largely because they will attack a human, unlike most other ants. Here are some tips to help you learn what red ants eat.

Fire ants, as you may already suspect, are omnivores. This means that they eat both plant and animal materials. Some of the food that fire ants look for include plants, caterpillars and other insects. Fire ants' primary goal when looking for food is that it is high in protein, fat and carbohydrates.

The plant and animal materials that the fire ants eat do not come directly from the fresh source. Rather, the fire worker ants collect the plant and animal materials and bring it to a sort of compost or food bank. There, the plant and animal materials decay and the fire ants are able to retrieve the energy they need.

Fire ants look for food during the day. They prefer to look for food when the sun is out since they use the sun for energy. You won’t see nearly as many fire ants out on a cloudy, cool day as you will on a hot, sunny day.

Fire ants will eat any food that is left out, especially sugary foods which are left outside. If you’re looking to get rid of fire ants in your home or on your property by cutting off their food source, it’s a good idea to keep eating outdoors to a minimum. If you do eat outdoors, make sure that you clean up after yourself extremely well, leaving no crumbs or food articles behind.
