How to Kill Cockroaches

By: Maeve Rich

Lots of people want to know how to kill cockroaches. They're thought to be one of the most disgusting bugs out there, and they can grow to be quite large. On top of that, they can be difficult to kill. If your home has been taken over by cockroaches, here are some tips to help you get rid of them.

There is more than one type of cockroach, meaning you may have to use more than one method of insecticide to kill the cockroaches, if that is the route you choose. Another reason that cockroaches are so difficult to kill is because they have been around for so long. They have become immune to the various types of insecticide that people use to kill them. Cockroaches are also extremely hardy bugs, being able to survive more than a month without water and several months without food. And, in one of the more disgusting aspects of cockroach survival, they don't need their heads to live, just to eat or drink.

Insecticides are one of the most popular options for getting rid of cockroaches. They aren't necessarily environmentally friendly though, and shouldn't be used around children or pets.

Gel traps catch cockroaches using a sticky substance which makes the cockroach unable to move.

Another option is a live trap. A live trap uses bait to lure cockroaches in. You can either buy one or make one yourself. To make a live trap at home, use a cup or a bowl with Vaseline on the wall and place food and a wet paper towel in the bottom of the bowl. The cockroach will climb in for the food and be unable to get out. This can be a bit difficult to make however, and can be a bit gross, so you may just wish to buy one.

Finally, if all else fails or if your cockroach problem is more severe, then you probably need to enlist the help of an exterminator. Professional help is the most effective way to get rid of a cockroach problem in your home.
