Awning Hardware Basics

By: Gene Rodriguez, III

The design and manufacture of modern awning hardware has resulted in products that are rugged and easy to install. Many awnings are custom made, taking into account the style, orientation and climate zone of your house.

The Importance of Secure Mounting
Your awning will be exposed to the elements and subject to wind stresses. The mounting hardware will be the anchor that keeps your awning secure. Look for awning mounting hardware that will resist rust. Also, make sure the mounting hardware has been engineered to withstand your local weather conditions.

Look For Strong Bones
The frame of your awning needs to be light, but strong enough to stand up to wind, rain and snow loads. Aircraft-grade aluminum is a good choice for strength and durability. Box frame construction will provide greater strength then tubular designs.

An Array Of Awning Cover Choices
The cover of your awning is what gives it charm and character. Obviously, you'll have a number of color choices, but there are other options to consider as well. Awnings come in two basic styles:

Venetian. These awnings are sideless, with just a top covering. Venetian awnings give a light, airy look, but are less effective at blocking the sun.
Hooded. These awnings have top and side covering. Hooded awnings are most effective at blocking sunlight, making them a perfect choice for energy savings.

Awning covers are also available in a number of materials:

  • Canvas. Canvas awning covers are inexpensive and give a traditional look, but they are difficult to keep clean and often need to be replaced every 3 to 5 years.
  • Synthetic. Synthetic materials are more expensive, but hold up to the elements well and are easy to clean.
  • Metal. Metal awning covers are most expensive, but will last for many years. Metal awnings are vulnerable to hail damage, which often requires replacement.

The Flexibility Option
A retractable awning will give you the flexibility to roll out or pull back your awning at will. Retractable awnings may be motorized or manually operated. Some motorized awnings even have optional rain or wind sensors to automatically close the awning.
