Remove Mold from Carpet

By: Jaceson Maughan

Mold is one of the most pervasive and dangerous problems that you can have in a home, so learning the proper way to remove it is imperative. When you discover that you've got carpet mold, you don't have much time to take action before the whole thing becomes unsalvageable.

When you determine that there is mold in your carpet, you've probably identified the area with the mold by the smell. You may even be able to see mold stains on the carpet. The first thing you will need to do for carpet mold removal is to pull up the carpeting and check the padding. If the padding shows mold patches or smells moldy, it's best to cut it out and replace it. Carpet padding is nearly impossible to clean completely of mold, so it's better to throw away any padding with mold and get some new stuff.

When it's time to clean the carpet, you need to purchase a specialized carpet cleaner designed for carpet mold removal. There are many professional strength cleaners on the market to eliminate carpet mold stain as well as any odor. First, clean the moldy patch of carpet well, then deep clean the rest of the carpet. Use a carpet shampooing machine or work with a professional, pull out as much of the water used to clean as you can. Keep fans and other forms of ventilation on the carpet so it will dry.

Carpet mold occurs most frequently in humid areas and in basements where there are small cracks in the foundation that allow water from the ground to seep through. In order to prevent your carpet from becoming infested with mold, you can take certain precautions. You can eliminate carpeting altogether in problem areas, such as damp basements. Run a dehumidifier periodically to ensure that the atmosphere is too dry for mold to grow. Whenever it's a nice warm day, open the windows to allow everything to dry. Taking these measures will hopefully mean that you won't be faced with the health risks of carpet mold.
