Cleaning leather clothing not only maintains its look and feel, it will keep your garments in great shape for many years.
Cleaning Leather Clothing Simply
The key to keeping leather clean is to understand that it is a natural product. Water or harsh cleaners will leach the natural oils out of the material leaving it stiff and cracked. There are a few simple things to keep in mind when cleaning leather:
- Don't be afraid to baby leather. If you need to clean your leather garment, a simple solution of water and baby shampoo is all that's required.
- Rinse cleaning products well. Using a damp cloth, rinse the area you've cleaned several times to remove any residual lather or soap.
- Dry equals happy. When you cleaned and rinsed your leather clothing, be sure to dry it thoroughly. Use a clean towel and then hand the garment in a spot where it will get plenty of air, but not in direct sunlight.
- It's okay to panic. If you're not comfortable cleaning leather clothing yourself, seek the help of a professional. Many dry cleaners can clean leather garments or can direct you to a professional leather cleaner.
Restore Life To Your Leather Clothing
Water (even a little) and exposure to the elements will pull the natural oils from leather, leaving it stiff. To avoid this, you need to condition the leather with conditioning oil. Look for a product that contains mink oil or other natural oils.
You should condition your leather garments every 6 to 9 months, or after any cleaning or stain removal.
Storing Your Leather Clothing
Proper handling and storage of your leather clothing will cut down on cleaning and conditioning and help extend the life of your garments. When storing your leather clothing, remember:
- Let your leather breath. Leather performs best in conditions that help it retain its natural oils. Direct sunlight and excessively dry air will take its toll on your leather clothing.
- Hang garments correctly. Make sure to use broad wooden or padded hangers that will help your leather clothes maintain their shape. Leather pants should never be fold across a hanger, but should be hung by the waist.
- Keep it dry. Never store leather clothing when it is wet. Make sure to dry leather garments completely in a well-ventilated space before putting them away in a closet or other enclosed space.
