Once you have opened the door and have went inside, the clutter begins. Usually its where the kids will leave everything they have from bookbags to shoes and coats.
Most of the time the are left wherever they land, without a thought. And the mail is scattered over the hall table without hesitation. Getting past the clutter is a major ordeal when trying to enter or leave your home through the main entryway. Taming that clutter will be easier when you have a system in place to corral all the stuff.
Map out your entryway. This is a simple drawing of your entryway so that you can get an idea of where you want to place things to help with getting organized. Using hooks or a hall tree for things like coats, those things that are needed when leaving home for the day. Use a small bench or storage cubes for shoes. Bookbags should never be placed in the entryway. Getting your kids out of this habit will not be easy and may take several weeks to accomplish the new habit of taking their bookbags to their bedrooms or a place for work or study. A designated place of study for kids younger than 12 should be in an area where there is close monitoring of their activity.
Designate one person to retrieve the mail every day or every other week (chose a schedule if you have more than one person who want to be the mail person).
The person bringing in the mail is now the household mail delivery person. They are responsible for making sure the mail is delivered to the person addressed and not just tossed on the table. This way the mail no long stays on the hallway table for everyone to see (especially nosy neighbors or in-laws).
