Spring Cleaning and Redecorating Go Hand in Hand

By: Sherry Holetzky

The most affordable way to give your home a pick-me-up is to start spring cleaning and give it a good old top to bottom going over. You really can't start redecorating in a cluttered or dingy space. It's time to get the junk out, get the cobwebs down, throw the windows open, let some fresh air in and get busy.

Once your home is fresh and clean, let the redecorating begin. The first thing I like to do is get some new plants. Plants help you bring the outdoors in, and since everything outside is fresh and green, it feels good to bring some greenery into the home.

Also bring in colors from nature. Neutrals and natural colors are popular, so use them to your heart's content. Some mouthwatering green apple or kiwi accents will definitely give beige a boost. Pastels are also in, so lighten things up with soothing shades.

Remember to add softness as well. You can accomplish this through the colors you choose, as well as through fabrics and other elements. Shimmering fabrics help increase that airy feeling, and plants will help soften up hard corners.

Spring cleaning will rid your home of dinginess and you can brighten things up even more by letting the sunshine in. Consider taking down heavy drapes and curtains or at least opening them wide. It won't cost you a thing.

Insert an inexpensive sheer panel if you are concerned with privacy, but let the sunshine in. Good lighting, especially natural light, helps transform any room into a brighter, airier, more upbeat space.

Spring cleaning may seem like drudgery, but try to think of it as an inexpensive redecorating tool. If you get the tough stuff out the way quickly, you can move on to the fun projects. Once the walls are clean, you can transform any room by giving it a fresh coat of paint. Painting is one of the most economical ways to make a big impact, whether you want to inject color, soften the tones of your existing color scheme or simply freshen things up.
