How to Remove Super Glue

By: Maeve Rich

It is not impossible to figure out how to remove super glue, but it sure can be daunting. Super glue is a difficult substance as far as stain removal goes. You've probably heard stories about super glue sticking to skin or clothes and being impossible or at least close to impossible to remove. Here are some tips to remove super glue.

Nail polish remover is great for super glue stain removal because of the acetone in it. You should check a bottle of nail polish remover before using it to make sure that it contains acetone. Acetone works extremely well to remove super glue from skin without damaging it. If you get super glue on a body part that you shouldn't put nail polish remover, you'll have to tread carefully. Anything involving your eyes should be treated by going to a doctor. If the super glue simply gets somewhere you wouldn't want to put nail polish remover but isn't considered dangerous, just try rolling the skin apart. Rolling is not the same as pulling. You want to roll gently, being sure that you don't tear the skin. Letting the skin soak in warm, soapy water can make this easier.

On the other hand, acetone can damage certain surfaces, meaning you need to be careful before you apply it. Try doing a test first to make sure that the nail polish remover doesn't discolor a surface before you put it somewhere obvious. You can also try using the acetone nail polish sparingly, putting a small amount on a Q-tip and using that to just soften the super glue. Then you can go about removing the superglue in another way (i.e. filing it with a nail file).

If you accidentally get super glue on glass, you can simply soak the glass to remove the super glue. This will take a little bit longer than applying acetone nail polish, but it can be extremely effective.
