7 Tips for Decorating a Small Living Room

Decorating a small living room can be a challenge. Fortunately, if you keep a few tips in mind, you and your living room can both be winners.

Decorating a Small Living Room

  1. Use mirrors to expand the space in your living room. Hang a large mirror to reflect the view from your back yard or a favorite painting. Mirrors will also reflect light, making your living room feel airier.
  2. Use glass for your table tops. Glass tables look like they are taking up less space than darker, wood tables and will contribute to the openness of your living room.
  3. Avoid going wild with furniture. No matter how much you love that super-sized living room set, you won't be able to fit it in and have enough area to walk through the room. Keep it to the bare minimum. For example, think about getting a loveseat rather than a full sized couch.
  4. If you can, push your bigger pieces of furniture against a wall. The less furniture that is in the middle of the room, the more open the room will seem.
  5. Coordinate your wall colors and the colors of some of your furniture. The furniture will appear to blend into the walls.
  6. Have transparent curtains so that more light comes into the room. Instead of hanging said curtains at the window line, hang them from the ceiling down to the floor to create more of an illusion of length.
  7. Cut back on clutter in the room and on the walls. This doesn't mean that you can't display knickknacks. It does mean that the surfaces of your tables shouldn't be buried with your stuff. In addition, remove any overstuffed pillows that you have on your furniture. While the pillows may look great in a large showroom, the pillows will add visual weight to your furniture and living room. If you have artwork, don't crowd the walls. Put up one or two key pieces.
