Diaper Sizes Use Weight For Proper Fit

Since newborns aren't delivered at a standard issue weight, you will need to know what diaper sizes your baby needs once he or she is born. As your baby grows, you will have to change diaper sizes to accommodate his increasingly ample bottom. A comfortable fit is important. Keep in mind that your baby's age doesn't determine the proper diaper size; his weight does.

Cloth Diapers
Most cloth diapers are available in five sizes. If you use a diaper service, check with them to determine which size suffices for your baby. The smallest size of cloth diaper is the preemie diaper, which will fit a four to six pound infant. Small diapers fit babies weighing from six to ten pounds. If your baby's weight is between 10 to 15 pounds, medium diapers are your best bet. Large diapers accommodate babies weighing between 15 to 22 pounds. Once your baby becomes a toddler, an extra large diaper should be adequate. Extra large diapers fit children weighing between 22 and 35 pounds.

Disposable Diapers
Disposable diapers are grouped in similar weight classes, although some brands simply label their product as small, medium, large and extra large. Newborn disposables fit a baby who weighs up to 10 pounds. Once the infant weighs in at eight pounds, a size one to two diaper might be a wise investment, especially if the baby is a bit chubby. This diaper size will be snug but not be overly tight and will protect the baby until he or she reaches 15 pounds.

Size three disposable diapers work best for babies who weigh 16 to 28 pounds.  Again, if a comfortable fit is important, you may want to choose a size four. This diaper works best with babies ranging from 22 to 37 pounds. A size five fits any baby who weighs between 27 and 35 pounds. Toddlers over the 35 pound range wear a size six.
Several disposable diaper manufacturers feature a diaper resembling underwear. These pull up diapers are available for children weighing up to 80 pounds.

By knowing your baby's weight and adjusting for comfortable fit, purchasing the correct diaper size should be an easy task for parents.
