When shopping for a portable crib keep in mind the keyword "portable." You will need a crib when you stay in hotel rooms or for visits with friends and relatives. Even an afternoon away can be more comfortably enjoyed if mom knows she has a safe and familiar place to lay the baby down for his nap.
Size Counts
Since you will be transporting this crib in your car, size counts. The crib should be lightweight and easy to handle. It should come in a case with a carrying handle and fold up small enough to fit in your trunk space with ease, even with all the other luggage and cargo you haul on a trip with children.
The crib must also be large enough to sleep a child comfortably until he is old enough to sleep safely alone on a regular bed without danger of rolling off.
Safety Concerns
Look for a crib that has safety features such as plastic covered (washable) edges and sturdy side panels. The crib mattress should lay smooth though lightly padded like a kindergarten nap mat. The mattress should be washable so that the surfaces can be sterilized.
The sides should lock into place before the base is able to lay flat for the mattress to be inserted. The sides must lock or latch into place so that the child hanging onto the edges cannot accidentally collapse the crib on himself or tip the crib.
Set Up Ease
Choose a crib that is easy to set up and easy to pack up when it's time to go. If the crib is as difficult to set up as an old camping tent in a rain storm, it will be a problem rather than a convenience. If you can't teach a ten year old how to set it up, don't buy it.
Stability and Durability
Look for a crib that is stable when set up, made of materials that will hold up under duress. Remember this crib will be traveling. It may be dropped, bumped, smashed and battered. Like luggage, the outer case should be tough. It should have a good carrying handle. If you plan to take it along on flights, it should be durable enough to handle luggage abuse at airports.
Look for a crib that is the right size, is safe, sets up easily, and is sturdy and durable. You baby's traveling comfort and safety will depend on it.
Many of us enjoy home decoration projects whether we are simply renovating or starting from scratch. For some reason the excitement of designing a baby nursery surpasses all other projects as far as enthusiasm is concerned. |
