James Patterson is an American fiction novelist who is known for his thriller novels. However, he has branched out from that genre quite a bit. He has written romance, cross-genre novels like the Witch & Wizard series and children's books. He also collaborates with other writers on many projects.
Personal life of Patterson
Patterson was born March 22, 1947, in Newburgh, N.Y. His career as an author has been phenomenal, though it has not been his only career. Patterson worked in advertising before making writing a full-time gig in 1996.
Patterson got his higher education from Manhattan College and Vanderbilt University. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Manhattan College and an Master of Arts from Vanderbilt University. Both of his degrees were in English.
He is married to Susan Patterson, with whom he has one son. Jack Patterson is James' only child and is currently (2012) pictured with him on the ReadKiddoRead facebook fan page.
ReadKiddoRead is James Patterson's project to help parents identify good books for their children. The site contains information on how to get children reading and how to let them read what they want to read. Patterson is a huge advocate for children reading and is often found writing tips on his fan pages and websites.
Patterson takes the fiction literature world by storm
The novels of Patterson sell extremely well, and he has been a No. 1 best-selling author for several years. He breaks records with his success, being the current, as of 2012, record holder for the most Hardcover Fiction best sellers. This is in the Guinness Book of World Records and could have something to do with the fact that the man publishes a lot.
The selling success of Patterson can certainly be attributed to talent, but may also be attributed to the fact that he is a one-man book factory. He does have helpers from time to time, but he still publishes a lot. In 33 years, he has published 71 books, an average of more than two books per year. These are books that are received well, too, helping him crush even writers like Stephen King in sales many years.
A distinction that Patterson alone holds as of 2012 is that of having had a book on both the children and adult New York Times bestseller lists simultaneously. His work on children's novels has also netted him an Author of the Year Children's Choice Book Award.
James Patterson's most well-known series is the Alex Cross series. Alex Cross is a forensic psychologist who is often pitted against insane criminals. Two of the books in the series have been made into Hollywood films. These are Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.
