Handling a Family Emergency and Getting a Boarding School Education

By: LuAnn Schindler

You live in the Midwest and your child is getting a boarding school education on the East coast. What happens if a family emergency comes about? What steps do schools and parents need to follow in case a family emergency arises?

School Rules
Each boarding school has its own set of rules regarding emergencies. If a family crisis occurs, a parent should contact the dean of the school and inform him of the emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, the administration may choose to inform your child about the emergency or have him contact you directly.

Schools generally have an after-hours emergency number that is given to parents. If an emergency occurs after normal business hours, contact this number of the school operator. You will be directed to the appropriate person who will help you with the situation.

Schools have policies in place that explain how emergency situations are handled and procedures to follow if your child needs to be absent from school due to a family emergency.

Emergency Funds
If the emergency warrants a trip home, your child may need emergency funds. Depending on the distance, your child may need to purchase a plane ticket to return home. This will require a credit card.

Emergencies at School
Parents sign medical release forms for their child attending boarding school. This grants permission for the appropriate school authority to seek medical treatment for your child. School officials will notify you if an emergency arises.

When an emergency does occur, parents need to follow the appropriate chain of command. Contact the school's dean of students and enlist his help in notifying your child about the emergency.
