Care Packages for College Hand-Delivered from Home

By: Helen Polaski

If your college student is attending university relatively close to home, you might think about hand-delivered care packages for college and picnic baskets rather than shipped care packages. While your student may not appreciate an impromptu visit, he or she will be less put out if you come calling with a laundry basket or other useful container filled to the brim with goodies.

Benefits of hand delivery

  • Face-to-face visit
  • Zero postage and shipping costs
  • Packages can be as large as your imagination or at least as large as your vehicle
  • Baked goods arrive in one piece
  • Delivery is timely
  • No chance the package will be delivered to the wrong student
  • You get to check up on your student

Additionally, hand-delivered gift baskets and care packages are a great way to get heavy and bulky necessities into the dorm room with ease.

Heavy or otherwise hard-to-ship items:

  • laundry soap (attach a note explaining, again, how to do laundry)
  • sheets and pillow cases
  • overstuffed pillows
  • big, fluffy bathrobe
  • bath towels and extra washcloths
  • soaps and lotions
  • small appliances (if allowed)
  • houseplants
  • nonperishable groceries
  • homemade cookies and canned items

School-related gifts
When it comes to college care packages and gift baskets, just about anything related to a computer or schoolwork will be put to good use.

  • laser ink and paper
  • desk lamp
  • mouse and mouse pad
  • notebooks and pens
  • cell phone, calling card, or updated phone

Gift basket containers
When hand-delivering a college care package, a traditional woven basket works well, but what works even better is a laundry basket.

A laundry basket will definitely be used again. A word to the wise, however: don't let your child talk you into taking his or her dirty laundry home with you and bringing it back next week clean and folded. The visits are great, but you have your own laundry to worry about.

Additionally, a small dorm-size refrigerator, filled with perishables, would be perfect. The fridge makes an excellent container and the gifts inside could range from beverages and fruit and vegetables to milk and cheese and a generous portion of your favorite party dip.

Reusable containers:

  • laundry basket
  • wastebasket
  • picnic basket
  • backpack
  • storage tub
  • fridge

Regardless of the type of container you use, the important thing to remember is to make sure you deliver it filled to the brim with items your college student wants, as well as some items he or she needs. Perhaps you could make the basket your "Personal Visitation Basket" and use it each time you drop in for a visit.
