Sharing dinosaur facts with your children is a fun way to spark their interest in science, animals and the Earth's history. Kids are fascinated by dinosaurs, because these creatures seem almost impossible. Separate what's real from what we see in movies, and you'll encourage kids to spend time learning.
How do we know dinosaurs really existed?
Since we've never seen a real dinosaur, it can be hard to believe they really existed. We know dinosaurs lived because we have found dinosaur skeletons, fossils of dinosaur footprints and even entire impressions of their bodies in ancient rocks. Ask your child to imagine being the first scientist to discover a dinosaur fossil. How amazing would it be to piece together the first fossilized dinosaur skeleton?
Where was the first dinosaur fossil found?
The first documented dinosaur fossil was found Western Europe in the 1820s. It is assumed that many dinosaur fossils were found before this; many earlier writings describe people finding "dragon" bones, which are assumed to be dinosaur bones.
Is there such as place as Dinosaur Valley? Where is it?
Dinosaur Valley is a state park in Texas where some of the best-preserved dinosaur tracks in the whole world can be found. Check out this link for more information if you're interested in visiting: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/dinosaur_valley/
Were most dinosaurs dangerous?
Because human beings have never interacted with dinosaurs, we can't know for sure if all dinosaurs were dangerous. However, when we consider size, weight and the fact that some dinosaurs were carnivores sporting massive claws, teeth and jaws, we can assume that dinosaurs were aggressive and quite capable of defending themselves. Even the plant eaters would probably have been considered dangerous because of their sheer size and weight.
Were all dinosaurs big?
Most dinosaurs were much bigger than people, some being the size of a bus or even larger. However, some dinosaurs were as small as housecats, so not all dinosaurs were big.
Have many dinosaur fossils been found in the United States?
Dinosaur fossils have been found all over the Americas. The first dinosaur bone found in the United States was discovered in New Jersey. A nearly complete skeletal fossil of a Stegosaurus was found in Colorado. It was so huge and heavy it had to be removed from the ground by a helicopter.
Although T-Rex, Pteranodon and Stegosaurus are all extinct, some of the animals that lived with them are still alive today. Learn about these living fossils, which could be as close as your own back yard.
