How to Boost SAT Vocabulary Scores

By: Elece Hollis

Vocabulary helps any student, especially those taking tests in preparation for college. How can a student increase his SAT vocabulary scores before he is scheduled to take the SAT?

Study
As a first step, obtain a sample test online by looking online at SAT test preview site. Note the types of words which might appear on the SAT test and begin studying to improve your vocabulary. The meanings of the words, how they are used and the general history of the words help the student to add to his skills.

Hiring a tutor or a test coach may be just the thing a student needs to help him find his weak areas and to guide you in that study. If that is not affordable look for a SAT guide book at the local school or public library. SAT trainer books can be purchased at book stores.

Take Practice Tests
Practice tests are available online or from a school English teacher or school counselor. Reading test questions and answers out loud will help students recall words on the actual SAT test.

Read
Reading literature from lists for high school students will improve your vocabulary, especially if you note unfamiliar words and look them up in a dictionary while you study.

Reading the newspapers and informative magazine articles can also improve vocabulary skills. Timely reading keeps a student up on the latest news and views as well as the latest terminology.

Students should start a running list of new words with definitions written in a few words. Go over the lists regularly and attempt to use the words in everyday speech.

Play Vocabulary Building Games
Question of the Day is a practice calendar that gives you one question to answer every day as you prepare for the SAT test. This is a simple way to tuck away tidbits of knowledge that will help you get a higher SAT score.

Word games are available for SAT students online. Online lists of the common test words can be used for quizzes. The words are listed by meaning or by word. Weekly quizzes on vocabulary lists will help students recall words and definitions.

In all these ways a student can prepare for his SAT test by building his vocabulary skills.
