About Livewire Learning

What is Livewire?
Live-Wire Learning is a system of online lessons for tutoring grades 7-12. The company is based in New Zealand, but covers curricula for countries worldwide. According to the Live-Wire site, its "...unique adaptive learning and testing technology allows content and skills to be introduced according to the needs of the individual student user and practiced with variety so learning is reinforced.

Computer Lessons
In a time when nearly everyone has a computer, or access to one, it's not a surprise that programs have been developed to tutor people. Tutorial software is ideal for people who need to focus on particular areas. They can cover a great deal of material efficiently, can be used according to the student's schedule and lifestyle, and are more cost-effective than a living tutor. For instance, Rosetta Stone's system for learning languages is a popular tool for immersion-style learning. Live-Wire offers a series of exercises for older children, which are scored and can be approached like a video game where the student competes with himself.

Modules
In the Live-Wire system, there are modules organized by subject matter. They cover accounting, English, achievement English, math and science. Each module offers a certain number of questions. Some questions ask for one choice from a list to be checked, some for several, and some involve entering words or sentences. There is some instruction, and the questions relate directly to that instruction t the completion of each module the student is rated according to her score. The program keeps track of the student's answers and progress.

Advantages
Teachers who approve of this type of tutoring cite several advantages. First, the immediacy of feedback. The program lets the student know whether the answer is correct or incorrect, and that information is listed to the side throughout the testing. A mostly green scorecard is the goal. Also, the feedback is specific to the student, which can't be achieved in a classroom. A classroom using this program can have the teacher focus on certain students and deal specifically with that student's difficulties. Students like the program because they can work at their own pace and at a comfortable level. They also like the convenience of using a computer, and a web-based program they can access almost anywhere. Students find it easy to use.
