Planning a Frugal Family Vacation

By: Alexandra Heep

When in a financial bind, it is easy to forego vacations altogether. However, it is important to get away once in a while in order to recharge. Also, there are many methods for planning a frugal family vacation without having to camp in the backyard.

Most importantly, involve everyone in the decision-making process, especially young children. That way, the vacation will be enjoyable for everyone, and no one will feel that less money equals less fun.

Stay closer to home. If you normally fly overseas for vacations, stay in the country instead. Pick a state you have never been to, and make it a mission to discover its attractions. If your usual vacation routine includes going out of state, choose a corner of your state you have not explored.

Keep it simple with young children. Do not be lured into a budget-busting, big-name theme park vacation by advertisements, especially if you have younger children. The reality is that lines will be long, kids will scream, the weather is hot, and prices of everything are over-inflated. The whole experience will leave you needing a vacation just to recover. Instead, search out local parks that are often overlooked and create a relaxing family vacation for everyone.

Keep dining out to a minimum. It is always cheaper to travel with picnic lunches. Also, if you are staying in a hotel with a refrigerator and microwave, buy your own food. Make dining out a special event only, and choose in advance, via online comparison shopping, what restaurants to sample.

Turn an event into a vacation. Choose a local event like a car show, a race, a ball game, a concert, or something else everyone in the family can enjoy, and create an escape around it. Look for inexpensive hotels in the area and other smaller events or free attractions like museums. Combine these with the main event, and create your very own itinerary for a frugal family vacation.
