Tips for Flying with a Toddler

By: Angie Pollock

Every year, millions of people fly the friendly skies, and many of those people are accompanied by young children. Flying on an airplane with a toddler can be stressful for both parent and child, and other passengers on the plane. Following these simple tips for flying with a toddler can minimize the stress and possible disruptions for everyone on board.

Reservations

When making flight reservations, it is recommended to adjust the flight time with your toddler's sleep pattern. Although your toddler may not stick to his or her sleeping habits during a flight, it is worth the extra effort to give it a try. Traveling in the evening and night hours will allow you to fill the day with activities, so that your toddler will be tuckered out for the flight.

While you are making your reservations, don't forget to ask the airline about their preboarding policy. Most airlines allow parents with small children to board early, so that they are settled in comfortably before the plane becomes packed with passengers.

Car seat

Although a restraint system or car seat is not required for flying on an airplane, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advises that a toddler flying in an airplane is safest in a government-approved child restraint system should a plane experience turbulence or an emergency. These restraints are hard-backed safety seats that are approved for use in vehicles and airplanes. An alternative to this type of restraint is the FAA approved harness restraint that is designed for children between 22 and 44 pounds.

Carry-on bag

Perhaps the most important tip for flying with a toddler is the carry-on bag. Pack items that will engage your child, such as toys, books, and snacks; however, check with the airline beforehand as to what is allowed on board. Include sick bags in your items to pack, especially for children who are prone to motion sickness. And always prepare for the unexpected by packing more than you think you will need, such as extra diapers, wipes and clothes.

Take breaks

During long flights with layovers, take the opportunity to take a break from the flight by walking around. Even if it is a short layover, a few minutes of stretching can make a big difference. Also take advantage of the preflight departure by arriving early and exploring the airport. This will take the newness off of the experience, thus leading to a less excitable toddler when boarding.
