There are many different types of cats, but the most popular cat is a mix of the different breeds, generally known as a house cat. If you want a certain breed of cat, you can choose from any of the different types of domestic cats. Each of these cat types has its own personality and identifying markings.
- Persians: Persians have long, fluffy hair. The hair is soft and can grow up to three inches in length. The Persian cat can be black, white, gray, orange or any combination of the listed colors. Persians tend to have high-maintenance personalities and you'll need to consider regular grooming to keep their hair from getting matted.
- Maine Coon Cat: The Maine Coon is one of the oldest cat breeds. Main Coons are good-natured and get along well with kids. Despite its thick coat, this cat tolerates warm and cold climates and is very happy no matter where you live. This is the largest of the domestic cat breeds; a Maine Coon can weigh 18 pounds and stretch 40 inches from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail, making it about twice the size of a mixed-breed cat. Like the Persian, the Maine Coon has long, thick fur that benefits from regular grooming.
- Manx: These cats are easily identifiable because of their structure. A Manx has a shortened spine and little or no tail, giving its back a permanent arch. This is one of the smarter breeds of cats and is a champion hunter. The Manx is also very playful. Care should be taken when selecting a Manx. If you wish to show the cat, it should have a stubby tail or no tail at all. Cats with this trait are subject to a spinal problem known as Manx Syndrome and seldom live past the age of 3.
- Siamese: The Siamese cat has distinctive gray and brown or gray and dark-gray markings. The hair on the Siamese cat is very short. This, along with the slender build gives the Siamese cat an elegant posture. Siamese cats are very independent cats. They are not good around young children, as they will claw or bite when they want to be left alone.
- Burmese: The Burmese is another short-haired breed. Their hair has a satiny feeling and they have yellow eyes. A Burmese can be quite vocal, even when it's happy. The Burmese breed loves people and will rarely act aggressively toward anyone. They're a bundle of energy and will keep their kittenish playfulness well into adulthood. Burmese cats often learn how to play fetch without any instruction.
· American Bobtail: The American Bobtail cat is recognizable because of its short tail. The American Bobtail can have short or long hair. The hair can be a variety of different colors.
· Russian Blue: The Russian Blue cat has hair that ranges from blue to bluish gray. Its eyes are usually green, but may be dark. This breed is also intelligent and playful, but can be shy around strangers.
