How to Conceive a Girl

By: Cheryl Bowman

Is there a way to learn how to conceive a girl? From the scientific perspective, no, but that doesn't stop people from trying (and swearing) by some particular ways to conceive a girl.

Conception Basics
Whether you have a boy or a girl depends entirely on which sperm reaches the egg first. All egg cells have an X chromosome. Sperm cells have either an X chromosome, which will conceive a girl, or a Y chromosome, which will conceive a boy. In theory, it's a 50-50 chance, as there are no studies that point to a particular way of guaranteeing a boy or a girl. In practice, there are some methods that people have found effective, although it's important to remember that there are no guarantees.

Trying to Conceive a Girl
Some people try using biorhythms to choose the sex of a child. The idea behind this is that changes in biorhythms affect the pH of the vaginal environment and the electromagnetism of the egg, which could make it easier for sperm with an X chromosome to reach the egg first.

If the vaginal environment is acidic, the ovum attracts the X sperm, which results in the conception of a baby girl. Creating a calendar of your biorhythms can help determine when the time is right to conceive a girl.

Another way to conceive a girl is to use the Shettles Method. This method focuses on differences between sperm with X and Y chromosomes. Sperm carrying the X chromosome are larger and more robust, but they're also slower because they carry more genetic information.

The Shettles Method times conception to give X chromosome sperm a better chance of surviving. To do this, you need to know when you ovulate. If you have sex immediately after ovulation, you raise your chances of having a boy; waiting a bit increases the chances of having a girl.

You can chart your ovulation cycle by taking your temperature each morning as soon as you wake up. Keep track of your temperature for at least two months, and watch for spikes in your body temperature to determine when you ovulate. Measuring your cervical mucus can also be an indicator of ovulation. You can find calendars online to help you chart this information.

Having sex two to three days away from ovulation may increase your chances of having a girl.
