Installing a Child Safety Deck

By: LuAnn Schindler

Installing a child safety deck represents an extra precaution for families with a swimming pool in the back yard. Accidents happen quickly, and parents need to keep young children, who can't swim, away from the pool.

A child safety deck comprises a barrier wall that can be raised when parents want to eliminate access from the pool area. The wall either rises from the floor of the deck or extends the existing deck where the railing currently is located. The wall can be lowered or raised by operating the pulley system, forming a 90 degree angle to create the barricade. This allows quick entry to the pool. It is important to keep the wall raised when adult supervision is not possible. This will aid in preventing accidents.

A child safety deck offers the best form of protection for several reasons. Children cannot go through or around the barrier. Children are unable to climb on the wall because it does not contain door handles or latches. Best of all, children are unable to view the pool when the wall is up, removing temptation.

Another style of child safety deck that keeps children protected on decks and patios is a retractable deck gate. This type of gate can be used to block stairways or separate a danger zone from the remainder of the deck or patio.
