With the rise in environmental concerns, many families are looking into chemical-free and natural home pest control methods to keep unwanted critters out of their homes, food, beds and so on. Here are some safe, inexpensive and environmentally friendly tips on coping with common indoor insects:
Cockroaches can survive a nuclear war, but you can kill them with soap! Experts recommend spraying a light solution of peppermint soap, such as Dr. Bronner's, and water (you can also add essential oils like citronella or tea tree oil) on roaches or anywhere you see them in the house. Boric acid (borax) is said to be highly effective against roaches and numerous other insects. Put it in high spots, such as the tops of cabinets, and the roaches will bring it back to their nests, killing the other roaches there, too.
Baking soda is poisonous to ants, so sprinkle it in infested areas. Spread around Cream of Wheat or Minute Rice, or sprinkle salt in anthills. Ants also hate vinegar; wiping down counters and cabinets with a solution of vinegar and water will keep them away. Other suggested deterrents: cucumber peel, cinnamon or peppermint.
Flies dislike basil, cloves, mint and orange peel; leaving any of these open in your kitchen will keep flies off your food. Recipes for homemade flypaper are available online as well.
You can find these and other eco-friendly pest control tips at the Natural Pest Control Information Web site, www.pestinformation.com, or at www.eartheasy.com. The Green People directory, www.greenpeople.org, offers a list of pest-control companies that only use natural products.
Finally, if you want to learn more about the assorted bugs in your home, pick up A Field Guide to Household Bugs: It's a Jungle In Here, by Joshua Abarbanel and Jeff Swimmer (Plume, 2007; $12). With chapters on bedbugs, lice, flies, roaches and more, this book offers numerous tips on preventing and breaking up infestations.
