What to Wear to an Amusement Park

By: Alice Langholt

Amusement parks are a great all-day experience for a summer day. They have lots to do, thrills, shows, rides, games, food, and swimming. You can spend the entire day there with your family and friends and never run out of things to explore. What should you wear for a day at an amusement park? Here are some suggestions for making the most out of your day and being completely prepared.

A Hat
A day in the sun requires that your head be covered to avoid getting sunstroke from becoming overheated. It is easy to ignore signs of overheating while the wind is blowing and you are zooming around on various rides. A hat will help protect you from the sun, and keep your face in the shade as well. It helps to have a hat with a brim, and you may also want a strap that goes under the chin, or a way to make the hat tight in case you want to wear it on a ride.

Sunglasses
Just as you need to protect your head, eye protection on a hot summer day is also smart. The ultraviolet rays of the sun can damage the eyes over time. For an entire day, it's a good idea to have and wear sunglasses with UV protection. Have a strap to hold them on your head.

Sunscreen
While not a clothing item, sunscreen is an essential form of protection for a day in the sun. Remember to reapply. This is most important if swimming will be an option, but regardless, plan to put some on before getting out of the parking lot, and reapply each time you stop for a snack or break.

Swimsuit & Towel
This is optional. If the amusement park offers swimming, you'll need them.

A Light Jacket
While you don't need to carry this around with you all day if the weather is hot, it's a good thing to pack if you will be there into the evening hours. Evening temperatures are known to drop around 15 degrees with a light wind in the evening. Plus, if you've been outside all day, the evening temperatures will feel cooler than usual and a jacket will be a welcome piece of clothing. Leave it in a locker for later retrieval or put it in the car to get later.

Good Shoes
Wear shoes that you will be comfortable walking around in all day. Don't wear flip flops because they could fall off your foot when you're on a ride. Have shoes with straps that will secure the shoes on your feet. Wear socks if you're prone to blisters.

Pockets that Close
In your clothing, shorts or shirt, have pockets that you can secure so that you can put your loose change, cell phone, wallet or other items inside and they'll stay inside while you're on a ride. Otherwise, have a fanny pack or other kind of small bag you can keep on your person.
