Genealogy: Getting Started, From Family Twigs to a Family Tree

By: Elton Gahr

Many people have wondered about their genealogy and considered the investigation of their family tree. The difficulty is that they often don't know where to start. There is an assumption that moving from those few twigs of information you have about your family tree is difficult, but the truth is that you already have much of the information that you need.

The first place to start is with the family members you do know. Simply write down the names of everyone in your family that you know. Once you have done that, ask the older members of your family to do the same thing. Your grandmother is, after all, not only likely to know the name of her own grandmother, but also aunts and uncles you may never have known existed. While doing this, you will also want to get the location of any important events that would have been recorded as well. These include, birth, death and marriage.

Once you have filled out the tree, you will want to gather the physical records that you already have. Again birth, marriage and death certificates are the easiest types of form for this, but things like letters, tax forms, military records and even criminal records can give you a lot of information as well, which can help create the story of their lives.

Combining your work with other people is the next major step to filling out your family tree. A number of databases exist, and as you go deeper into your family tree, the odds become greater that you will share ancestors with people that you don't know. This can create a large family tree quite quickly.

The final advantage that a modern amateur genealogist has over someone even a few years ago is the Internet. A lot of records were once difficult to get online, but several websites now have access to all of that information. You can simply enter names, and these websites will help you find a lot of information, including some of the more difficult information such as census and other records.

While there is almost no limit to the amount of time that can be spent gathering information about your family tree, the beginning of the process is the most intimidating, but it doesn't have to be much harder than simply talking to your own family.
