In these days of two-income families, endless job responsibilities and latch-key kids it is more important than ever to set some time aside for family activities. Several times a week, regardless of club meetings, sports activities or other family obligations, pick something to do as a family. Whether it's a few hours playing games together or a family night of pizza and movies, it is important to spend fun time together. Not only does having fun as a family build memories, it also cements family bonds.
If your family is athletic, think about taking the kids to the roller skating rink or for a game of miniature golf. No fair sitting on the sidelines-this is supposed to be a "family" fun activity. Consider getting everyone some roller-blades and utilizing the neighborhood parks. Many of them have a walking trail that can be skated on, or you can use the tennis or basketball courts if they are not in use. A picnic at the park, maybe with a kite or a game of catch is also an inexpensive way to spend some time as a family. All of these activities are fun for both children and adults and, with childhood obesity on the rise, the physical activity is a plus.
Gather up all the board games, dominoes or cards in the house, and let each person in the family take turns picking a game for the family "game night." Make the evening special by letting the children help pick the snacks when at the grocery store. By allowing the children to help pick both the games and the snacks, they are more likely to enjoy the evening with the family, and you may even find that before long they ask if they can invite a friend or two.
Even though this is supposed to be "family time," encourage your children to invite their friends. As your children approach those dreaded teenage years, it is important to know their friends, and there's no better way to get to know them than to have them as frequent visitors to your home.
Whether your children are two, ten or twenty; you can find fun, age-appropriate activities to give your kids memories of fun times together for years to come.
Genealogy is defined in the dictionary as 'descent traced continually from ancestor', a study of pedigree. For most of us, it simply means trying to figure out what relation Aunt Millie's great -great grandson is to our daughter in law. |
I recently had the opportunity to research my DNA and find out some long lost relatives through DNA testing from Gene Tree. Why not continue this great personal project by finding out more about my ancestors by joining a website devoted to helping people find and fill in their family tree. |
