Animal Crafts: How to Make Animal Bookmarks

By: Lucy Oliveri-O'Hearn

There are so many fun animal crafts you can create with your kids. To help hold the page in your favorite book make an animal buddy that can help you. You and your friends can make animal bookmarkers that will not only keep your place in a book you're reading but will also look great as it sits on your desk or bedside table.

To get started, collect all of your supplies first and lay them out on a table or desk.

Materials needed:

Oak tag paper or a small piece of poster board

Pencil

Scissors

Marker, and or colored pencils, and or crayons

To begin cut out a piece of the oak tag paper that is about 7 inches long by 3 inches wide.

On this bookmark template draw out the animal that you would like to have hold your pages. The top third if it's body sticks out above the book pages. The bottom two thirds sit flat inside the book. (See picture.) You can draw a cat, giraffe, dog, alligator, tiger, mouse-anything you find to be fun. Use your pencil to draw all of the animal's features before you add color. Once you finish drawing the details of your animal you will carefully cut it out. Next decorate both sides of the animal, the front and back of its head and body. You can keep the colors true to life or you may chose to have a purple and pink striped tiger-whatever you like.

Now that your animal is all decorated you are going to cut a slit up where the front legs of the animal would be. This is how you will get your animal to hang on to the page in your book. (See picture.) Once the slit is cut, cut out a little section between the front leg and the body so that the animal can slide onto the page easily and it won't rip the books page. Now you're finished and I'm sure your animal bookmark looks great! You may even want to make one for a friend.
