How to Make a Diorama With a Winter Scene

By: Denise Oliveri

Teach your kids how to make a diorama with some basic supplies you can find around the house. As long as you look at this cute winter scene craft, you will imagine the fun of playing in the snow, even if none has fallen where you live. The bare trees and the construction of a snowman are classic signs that the winter season is upon us.

Craft Difficulty Rating: Average

You Will Need:

  • 3 cotton balls

  • Foam pieces (white, light brown, dark brown, orange and black)

  • Snow confetti

  • Glue

  • Scissors

  • 11 mini craft sticks

  • Red acrylic paint

  • Paintbrush

Instructions:

  1. Use 5 mini craft sticks in a horizontal position and glue in place using 4 mini craft sticks in a vertical position to construct a fence. Let dry.

  2. While the fence is drying, cut an 8-inch piece of white foam into an oval shape.

  3. Once the fence has dried (approximately 15 to 20 minutes), you will need to stand it up and glue to the remaining 2 mini craft sticks to the back for supports. Hold in place for at least 2 minutes before letting go, and then set somewhere to dry completely where it won't get knocked over.

  4. Paint the fence red after it has dried completely.

  5. Glue the fence to the center of the 8-inch white oval that you cut earlier.

  6. Stack 3 cotton balls on top of each other by gluing them in place next to the fence. Cut 4 small circles from black foam for the snowman's eyes and 2 buttons, a carrot shaped nose from orange foam, a hat from black and white foam and stick arms from dark brown foam. Glue the pieces in the proper places to make a snowman.

  7. Use a piece of dark brown foam to cut out a tree. It will be a bare tree since it is wintertime. Glue the tree in place by holding it for about 2 to 5 minutes. Let go and it should stand on its own while it continues to dry. If not, you will need to hold it in place longer. You may even want to hide something behind the tree that helps to keep it propped up until it is dried completely.

  8. Cut ground spots out of light brown foam and glue to the white foam piece.

  9. Apply glue around the white foam and few drops on the fence. Sprinkle snow confetti onto the glue and let dry.

  10. Your winter scene is done.
