Snowman Art: Make a Stuffed Snowman

By: Lucy Oliveri-O'Hearn

What a great time of the year to make your own stuffed snowman art doll. Look around your house and you may find most of the materials that you need. Remember to ask your parents' permission before you use materials; they can help you find all your supplies. Collect all the materials that you will need before you start work-it's so much easier to have everything laid out and ready before you start. Let's begin.

Materials needed:

1. One small, new white tube sock

2. A piece of yarn about 2 feet long

3. A small square of black and orange felt, about 3x3 inches

4. Glue that will stick to cloth

5. A small strip of colorful material or felt, about 1x6 inches

6. Cotton batting

7. A pompom, any color

8. 2 or 3 buttons, any colors

9. 2 elastics

Start by stuffing the sock halfway full with the cotton batting, then tie it closed with the piece of yarn. Now you have the bottom half of your snowman ready. Fill half of the top section with batting and close that up with an elastic-this is the head. The remaining top section of the sock will be turned down over half of the head so it becomes a hat. Now the body of your snowman is complete.

To decorate, you will use the long narrow strip of material for the scarf. Tie it around the snowman's neck. Using the black square of felt, cut out two eyes and a mouth. Cut out a triangle for a carrot nose from the orange piece of felt. Glue all the felt shapes down on the snowman's head to give him a face. Glue the buttons down where shirt buttons would be. On the top of the head where the top of the sock is folded back down, glue the pompom to the top section, the hat of the snowman.

You may want to add other decorations to your snowman. Once you have customized it and are pleased with your results, go and share your snowman creation with your family and friends. I'm sure it will look great.

Happy snowman building.
