Ways to Make Friends Outside of School

By: LuAnn Schindler

Friends aren't limited to a school setting. There are ways to make friends outside of school. Meeting new people in different settings will introduce your child to a wide range of personalities. The following suggestions vary from elementary school-age to teenagers. Most are adaptable for any age.

  • Neighborhood. Encourage your child to play outside your house and get to know children who live in your neighborhood. If you live in a larger community, you will want to supervise play time with neighborhood children.
  • Clubs and teams. Community organizations, including the YMCA and other groups, offer a variety of athletic opportunities. Non-sports related clubs may also be available. Ask your child what interests he has and find opportunities, including workshops and groups that teach about those interests in a fun learning environment.
  • Camp. Summer camps are available for a variety of different purposes:  sports, music, academic subjects, religion and service organizations. Camp lengths vary from a few days to several weeks. Some offer overnight adventures; others are day camp, only. Your child will meet different people at these camps and will learn about different personalities and the art of cooperation in a short period of time.
  • Job. A part-time job not only puts extra spending money in your child's wallet, but it also serves as an introduction to new people and the world of work. More than likely, your child will work with several different people, especially if his job works in shifts.
  • Religious organization. Joining a church or place of worship introduces your child to others his age. Encourage attendance at youth group and children's programs. A religious bond might strengthen a friendship.

Making new friends away from the school setting is relatively easy.  All parents need to do is help their children find outside interests.
