How Kids Should Behave at a Public Swimming Pool

Children are rough and rowdy when they play outside in the summer. Swimming in a public pool involves some risks, which increase if children do not behave according to rules. How should a child behave at a public pool so that he doesn't risk injury? Here are some tips and guidelines for parents.

Know the Rules
When attending a pool for the first time, meet the staff including the lifeguards. Realize the importance of obeying rules and of promptly obeying the lifeguard's orders even when you may not understand them.

Go over all posted pool rules so that you have a good review of them before you swim. Swimmers are expected to obey all posted rules.

General Behavior Rules for Pool Use

  • Never bully or play rough in the pool.
  • Don't try group games when other children are in the pool and may get in the way.
  • Never run on the pool's sides because you might fall or knock someone else down into the water.
  • Never try stunts from the diving board or slides.
  • Before using the diving board, check all depth markers. Walk onto the board. Do not run. Never dive from any spot except the diving board.
  • Use sunscreen and don't swim too long to avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated.
  • Never eat or chew gum in the pool or take drinks into or beside the pool. Only eat in designated areas and throw all trash into trash cans to help keep pool area clean.
  • Use the toilet before swimming and always take a shower before and after swimming to avoid spreading or carrying germs.
  • Be considerate of other swimmers and careful of small children around you.
    Always obey lifeguards.
