The importance of communication skills is often underestimated, despite the fact that communication is one of the most important life skills you can possess. Keeping the communication lines open is often associated with romantic relationships, but it is also important for friendships, families and jobs.
Misunderstandings
A common problem with a lack of communication is misunderstandings. This is especially prominent in this age of digital technology and the Internet. If you're not open with someone verbally, a misconstrued e-mail could result in things getting blown out of proportion. This is due to the inability to determine someone's tone or attitude from an e-mail or an instant message.
Honesty
The key to successful relationships-regardless of the type-is honesty. You may think a white lie here or another there is no big deal, but those small lies could end up becoming much more of a problem as they grow. For example, let's say a member of a romantic relationship is trying to hide his or her shopping addiction. If there is no communication, a small white lie that covers up where the partner was during lunch could lead to where the rent money went. Communication goes hand in hand with honesty. Without both, relationships will be in danger.
Skills
Practice
Just like any other skill, it takes practice to master communication skills. Practice with a family member or friend. Use role play scenarios to simulate an argument with a significant other.
If you're dating a woman, communication styles are something you need to know about. If you can learn to speak her language, you can make a woman feel at ease and truly listen to what she has to say. |
