Perfect Your Flirting Technique

By: Heather Mayer

Perfecting your flirting technique is key to scoring a mate or, if you're not on the lookout for a longterm relationship, at least an exciting fling. Flirting is all about grabbing your interest's attention and keeping it. There are many techniques methods that work for different people, but they by and large follow the same basic rules of human behavior. Unlike some other aspects of life, when it comes to flirting, there is a right way to do it and there are definitely wrong ways to try to do it.

Techniques
The nuances of flirting may not be the same across the board for guys and girls, but the main techniques are the same for all parties.

  • Touch: Physical contact is an effective way to send a message, either of interest or disinterest. A fleeting touch on the arm can immediately affect the two people involved. Feeling brave? A touch on the hand is even more personal and intimate-sending the sure message that there is interest.
  • Eye contact: Holding eye contact for one second is a good sign he or she is interested. That brief connection can go a long way if the parties aren't too shy to make the first move. Holding eye contact for more than one second can feel threatening and definitely disturbs the mood.
  • Body language: How you carry yourself sends a message about you, your mood and your interest. For example, turning your entire body-instead of just your head-toward a person signifies you're interested and attentive.

Perfection
As with all things, practice makes perfect. Or as some might say, perfect practice makes perfect. Flirting can be considered a skill that needs practice, tests and more practice. While different styles work for different people, there are several tips for everyone to polish their flirting technique and hit it off with that love interest.

  • Act interested, but not too interested. While this method borders on the line of playing hard to get, it isn't as dramatic. Not being overly interested allows room for mystery and doesn't make you seem desperate.
  • When it comes to body language, mirror your interest's posture and moves to create an image of harmony and togetherness. While this may appear subtle, he or she will recognize how in sync you are with each other. That's a good sign.
