Ten Things to Know Before You Speed Date

By: Shawn Donovan

As the years go by and technology improves, things become available to us faster and easier and the human attention span decreases. It's no surprise that this trend has even transitioned into our personal relationships. Enter speed dating. This activity mixes and matches a group of singles together in furious three-minute rounds. Before you decide to dive head first into speed dating, here's a top ten list of things you should know.

Come prepared.
Knowing what you're in for is a great start. You are going to see a lot of people in a very short amount of time. Everyone will be wearing numbers and you'll have a scorecard to keep track of the ones you liked and the ones you didn't. Make sure to mark down everyone's names and numbers properly.

Know the top questions.
Think of it almost like a job interview. There are certain questions that are bound to pop up. Do you have or want children? What's the longest relationship you've been in? Where do you see yourself in ten years? Have answers to these questions ready to go.

Ask questions to keep the conversation going.
In addition to the questions above, come with your own questions that can keep the conversation going. Something like, "What would your dream job be?" allows the other person to open up and talk candidly about his interests.

Look your best.
You pretty much only have time for a first impression here and you want it to be a good one. Dress in your best clothes, comb your hair and brush those teeth.

Outline your goals.
It's important to clearly state your goals and let the other dater know if you'd be a right match.

Be confident.
Nobody likes someone who lacks confidence. Even if you're a computer geek, be a confident computer geek.

Don't be too serious.
Speed dating is meant to be fun. There's no need to be all business all the time. Work humor into your questions and answers and try to make the other person laugh.

Keep it clean.
Raunchiness is a major turn off. Don't jump right into questions about sex.

Keep your baggage out of it.
Everybody's got baggage, but nobody wants to hear about it within the first three minutes of meeting someone. Leave your problems at home for the day.

Have fun!
Just be yourself and enjoy the experience.
