Old Friendship Sayings

By: Lisa Bower

There are few things as universal as friendship: Friendship sayings are a great way to remind you of the people in your life. Just try reading through a few famous friendship quotes without wanting to hunt down your friend, call them, or hug them! In today's day and age, a good friend may be hard to find, but once you've met someone who will be with you through the good and the bad, you'll never want to let them go. The following are some of the most popular friendship sayings and quotations to help remind of your friends' worth.

Henry Ford once said, "My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me." Here, Ford reminds us that friends should make us be the best we can be. If we spend our time with people who inspire us and lead good lives, we in turn will be better.

Some of the best friends a person can have are those who do not want to change you and see you for exactly who you are. Elbert Hubbard once alluded to the unconditional love between friends by saying that "Your friend is the man who knows all about you, and still likes you."

For those of us who are troubled or conflicted, a friend can be one of the most honest and caring soundboard or confidant. With them, we can figure out of what we are truly capable. As George Herbert once said, "The best mirror is an old friend." These people know us best, they can tell us when we're out of line and can see us for who we truly are.

Similarly, who doesn't need someone with whom they can process the world? As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "A friend is one before whom I may think aloud." A true friend is someone we do not have to censor ourselves around.

When a person is at their worst or has experienced tragedy, a friend should still be there for you. Marlene Dietrich touched on this loyalty by saying, "It's the ones you can call up at 4:00 a.m. that really matter."
