What Are Possible Causes of Infidelity

Infidelity doesn't happen because someone's loved one is a monster or villain. Infidelity isn't necessarily a good thing to do, but it doesn't just happen because one person wants to hurt their loved one. Instead, there are a number of causes of infidelity. And of course, the first places to look are the relationship and the personalities of the two people in it.

First off, let's be clear: when people cheat, it is not only about the sex they may or may not be having. Usually, when a person seeks an outside relationship, even if it's based around sex, it's because there are other factors at play.

One of the most common causes for infidelity is lack of attention. If someone starts to feel as if he is unappreciated in a relationship, he will go elsewhere to fill that need. It could be as big as someone working long hours at the office or as small as one person never asking about the other person's day. It boils down to feeling loved.

Some people cheat because they think or know their partner has cheated on them. Revenge infidelity could be based out of knowledge or suspicions, and it's done to even the score or get back at the other person. Another form of revenge cheating is when one person feels inadequate and wants to even the playing field. For example, if one person is excelling at work and the other is just getting by or worse, it could create a feeling of resentment which could then lead to infidelity.

Another reason for cheating is that one person may have a self-destructive streak. These people do not trust that good things stay that way; they seek to end the relationship before they themselves are hurt. Drugs and alcohol can also play a big part of this.

One last cause for infidelity is that the person has wanted the relationship to end for quite some time but didn't know how to do it. Instead of brining up the subject, they make themselves the villain so that a clean break can happen.
