How to Handle Jealous People at Work

Everyone should know how to handle jealous people at work. For example, in an unfortunate twist of events, you may find yourself dealing with your significant other's jealous ex-girlfriend in the workplace. What do you do if she starts undermining your projects? This type of harassment is sure to get you noticed, but not in a good way. What about other jealous types? Perhaps you have an envious co-worker who covets your accolades. Because jealousy is not a one-size-fits-all problem, there are different ways to handle it. Here are some of the most common conundrums and easy ways to solve them:

Jealousy From A Co-Worker
Competition among co-workers can make for a healthy and thriving work environment, but there is a fine line between constructive competition and downright envy. If you are feeling the envy vibes from a co-worker, you may not know exactly how to confront her. Should you speak to your co-worker directly? What if she denies jealousy, or finds a way to make you out to be the bad guy?

The best way to deal with jealousy from a co-worker is to ignore it. Giving the matter your attention will only cause it to grow into a more uncomfortable situation. Avoid speculating with other co-workers about this person's alleged jealousy toward you. Also, do nothing to feed the fire. Beware of gloating or bragging about your new raise or promotion. Although you should not feel badly about receiving a hard-earned promotion, you should be considerate of those who work with you. You never know when you may need someone's help in the future.

Jealousy From A Boss Or Supervisor
One of the most difficult and uncomfortable positions to be in is when you have a boss who is jealous of you. Inspired by his own insecurity, your boss may lash out at you if his superior takes notice of you. It can be almost impossible to work under those conditions because the boss may inconvenience you with extra work so that you can fail.

For a jealous boss, the best way to handle it is by proving that you are a team player and re-establishing your loyalty to your superiors. You may not feel this generous, but consider that your immediate boss is most likely the one who will send out any future recommendations for you. Find ways to make your boss' life easier. It may be as simple as bringing in an extra cup of coffee specifically for your boss. Simple and random acts of kindness will slowly but surely improve your relationship.

Jealousy From Outside The Workplace
You may find yourself in the difficult position of defending yourself against jealous individuals in your personal life. That may be fine if it did not bleed over into your professional life. It is wise to maintain a separation between personal and professional. If you have a jealous spouse or ex calling you non-stop at your work, you must establish with him that you will not tolerate harassment at your workplace. If it continues, be sure to inform your boss that you are receiving unwanted phone calls. You do not need to go into detail about why the individual is calling you. Many companies have policies in place that protect their employees from harassment. It is likely that your company may relocate you so that you are no longer answering the telephone or dealing face-to-face with the public.
