Creating a Healthy Relationship

Creating a healthy relationship is often contingent on a handful of key relationship components. Some people will place more importance on some aspects of a relationship over other aspects, but it is rare to find a successful relationship that does not include many of the following facets.

Communication

For many couples, communication comes fairly easily in the beginning of the relationship and requires more effort down the road. Don't forget about little aspects of communication that you used frequently when you were first dating, such as leaving a sweet note on the counter or sending a random email. If you need a long period to talk about a particular issue and aren't finding time in your schedule naturally, don't be afraid to tell your significant other so you can work together to make time. Letting things build up or fester is never healthy.

Don't discount nonverbal communication as an aspect of communication. Providing a hand to hold or giving a hug at just the right moment can go a lot further than words ever will.

Honesty and trust

Honesty and trust are two of the most important components of any relationship. It is very difficult to have a successful relationship when you do not trust the other person. Don't be afraid to share who you are with your partner, including aspects of your past. It can take time to build complete trust with another person, but it will be well worth the effort.

Time and work

Relationships involve a significant time commitment and require work on a regular basis. They also require a successful balance of time spent with each other and time spent elsewhere. No matter what point you're at in a relationship, it isn't healthy to focus solely on that other person at the expense of your family and friendships. If you reach the point that you get married and have kids, it's still important to make time for just the two of you. Of course your kids will be a central priority in your life, but that doesn't mean that your partner will be less of a priority than before.

Balance

Balance goes beyond finding a balance in your life between your romantic relationship and your family and friends. It also involves a balance within the relationship. Is one person always initiating the dates? When you're further along in the relationship, is one person always taking care of all of the household tasks? It is perfectly normal to divide your responsibilities, but it is also important to ensure that both people are doing their fair share. It is easy to resent your partner when you feel that you are doing more than you should. Talk through these issues and re-evaluate your relationship as needed to keep the playing field as equal as possible.

Forgiveness

If there is one important aspect of relationships that is often overlooked, it is forgiveness. Mistakes are inevitable in any relationship. Forgiveness is the healthiest way to move on from them. Forgiveness should not be confused with forgetting. When someone has done something that has hurt you deeply, you will not forget that any time soon. However, it doesn't mean that you can't forgive that person and do your best to start moving on from the situation.
