How to Write a Marriage Announcement

By: Jennifer Maughan

How to write a marriage announcement differs from other kinds of announcements, such as a wedding engagement announcement or a wedding invitation. A marriage announcement lets those who were not invited to the ceremony know that you've recently been married. There are certain rules of etiquette to follow when figuring out how to write a marriage announcement.

Intent
The recipients of wedding announcements are generally those who either could not attend the ceremony due to distance, co-workers not familiar enough to have a wedding invitation, casual acquaintances or even friends and family when the couple has chosen a small and intimate ceremony or an exotic destination wedding. Therefore, the intent of the wedding announcement is to give the details of the ceremony.

Contents
Include the full names of you and your spouse, as well as the full names of each person's parents. Also important for a wedding announcement is the date and location where the wedding ceremony took place. Depending on the personality and style of the couple, wording can be formal and elegant or more casual. Other information can be included on the announcement, such as a new home address, depending on the couple's preference.

Example #1: Formal
Mr. and Mrs. John Smith are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter, Anne Smith, to James Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones on August, 15, 2002, at The Old Rock Church in Portland, Maine.

Anne Smith and James Jones were married on August 15, 2002 in a private ceremony at the Old Rock Church in Portland, Maine. The couple's new address is [address].

Example #2: Informal
Ann and James Jones are happy to announce their recent union on August 15, 2002 at The Old Rock Church in Portland, Maine. They will be residing at [address] after a honeymoon in the Bahamas.

Ann and James Jones were married on August 15, 2002 at The Old Rock Church in Portland, Maine. They are eager to begin their new life together.
