What Is the Right Age to Get Engaged?

By: Lisa Bower

Regardless of what people say, there is no right age to get engaged. Whether you are 18 or 70, if the timing is right and if your relationship is solid, getting engaged could be the best decision you ever make. If you aren't careful, however, it could wind up being the worst mistake of your life. It is important to really consider everything, from your relationship to the reasons for wanting to marry, before slipping on a ring and heading down the aisle. The following are some age-related things to consider when it comes to whether the two of you are ready for marriage.

If you and your loved one are young, think about why you are getting engaged. An engagement is more than wearing a white gown or tux. Instead, an engagement signals that you and your loved one have plans to marry. This means each of you is off the market, will live together and make joint decisions about everything from cats to lawncare. Though there is no right age to get engaged, be sure that you are ready for such a huge commitment. You don't want to get married young only to realize you weren't ready to stop dating, to share ownership of a home or make so many joint decisions.

Make sure that each of you is not just in love but ready to combine your lives. An engagement means that you will do everything, from move in together to have to decide which friends or families to visit during the holidays. An engagement really is a union before the official marriage union. Being ready for an engagement and marriage means that you are ready to settle down and join your life with your loved ones. You could be 40 and still not ready for this kind of a commitment.
