How to Include Children in the Wedding Ceremony

By: Todd Pheifer

Children are often part of a wedding extravaganza, as families attempt to include as many members as possible in the process. The challenge with children is that although they may be precious and loved, they can also be difficult to manage and incorporate into the event. Most often challenges occur because children are not mature enough to understand the context of the situation, and wedding proceedings can be an environment that is not particularly suited to children. Therefore, couples should consider the role of children in a wedding ceremony with some care.

The traditional roles for children in a wedding are often the flower girl or ring bearer. These roles are more symbolic than functional, but they can be a way to incorporate children into the ceremony without a major inconvenience. Both roles can often be filled by several children, and if necessary, the children may be able to perform their duties and then be escorted by an adult to another location where they do not have to endure the rest of the ceremony.

Another place to involve children is for tasks that are not terribly complex. For example, they could hand out programs, stand by the guestbook, or collect gifts from guests as they walk into the facility. Each of these tasks can be appropriate based on the age and maturity of the child.

For individuals who want to incorporate children into the actual ceremony, children can read a scripture, poem or story that pertains to the event. Or, depending on their level of talent, they can perform a piece of music that adds an appropriate element to the environment. Ultimately, children may be a good addition to a wedding ceremony, but couples should do what is best for them. Not everyone can be involved in the ceremony, and some children are best left as spectators.
