How to Make Pew Bows for Weddings

By: Alice Langholt

Learning how to make pew bows for weddings is very easy. Making your own wedding party decorations is a great way to save money or to put more of your budget toward entertaining guests.

Pew bows are those large ribbon bows that attach to the end of each pew, facing the aisle. They're one of the best church decorating ideas, and simple enough to do yourself, although you'll have more fun if you enlist the help of friends to prepare your decorations and celebrate the excitement of your upcoming union.

Materials:

  • Several yards of three-inch ribbon that matches the color scheme of your wedding; you'll need three yards of ribbon per bow
  • Florist wire, to wrap around the loops of each bows you create; thinner wire is best
  • A bow hanger or hook for each bow

What to Do

  1. Cut the ribbon into lengths of three yards.
  2. Cut a four-foot length of ribbon off the three-yard piece and set it aside. This will be used for the streamers.
  3. Loop the end of the ribbon over to form a two-inch loop.
  4. Wrap the end of the florist wire around the end of the loop to hold it together. Twist it securely at the bottom of the loop.
  5. Create another loop, larger than the first.
  6. Wrap the florist wire around the end of the loop again, securing it with a twist at the bottom.
  7. Continue creating and securing loops, placing them across from one another, until all the ribbon has been used.
  8. Arrange the loops in a circular arrangement, like the petals of a flower, with the smallest loop in the center.
  9. Fold the four-foot length of ribbon in half and attach it to the bow in the center of the back, using the florist wire to secure it.
  10. Attach the hanger or hook to the bow, and affix it to the end of the pew.

If you have wedding bows at the end of each pew lining the aisle, you will have a beautiful way to draw attention to the aisle as the wedding party walks toward the altar. The church will also have an extra measure of elegance on your special day.
